Ready to grow your business with Pinterest marketing in 2022? In this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know to create a success Pinterest strategy for your business.
It’s no secret: Pinterest has changed a LOT in the last few years, and while the changes have left many people wondering if Pinterest marketing is still right for their business, I’m hear to assure you that it is.
The problem isn’t that Pinterest isn’t an effectively marketing platform anymore, it’s that the platform has undergone major changes, so the strategies that were working a few years ago aren’t going to fly anymore.
Keep reading to learn 5 essential strategy updates you need to make to see success on Pinterest in 2022.
Pinterest Strategy #1: Avoid repins and focus on fresh content
Up until a couple of years ago, repins were the way to go on Pinterest, and they were foundational to a successful strategy.
Basically, users would create a set of Pins and then continually loop them over and over to their boards.
I would argue that this is the biggest change to Pinterest strategies from the past. Pinterest now wants users to create fresh content on a consistent basis, rather than resharing old content.
You can still create multiple Pin graphics per piece of content (product page, blog post, podcast, landing page, etc.), but you only want to share each Pin once- I don’t even recommend repinning to other relevant boards, like I was recommending for the beginning of 2021. Pinterest is really discouraging resins, so I avoid them all together.
Pinterest Strategy #2: Focus on pinning your own content
Another strategy that was essential up until recently was repinning a large amount of other people’s content. When i first started with Pinterest marketing a few years ago, pinterest wanted you to Pin around 100 pins per day, and this largely came from repinning your own content and pinning others’.
Now however, the emphasis is on sharing your own content. Like with repinning, this is because Pinterest wants a fresh supply of new content for its users, rather than the same Pins being repined over and over (think quality over quantity!).
I still like to Pin a few Pins/week from others for my and my clients’ accounts, but I keep this to 10-20% of the pinning, and many accounts do just fine with sharing exclusively their own content, so it’s definitely not necessary.

Pinterest Strategy #3: Take advantage of Pinterest’s e-Commerce features
When Pinterest first hit the scene, it was a go-to marketing channel for bloggers looking for more traffic. Today, it’s still an amazing traffic generator for bloggers and service-based businesses, but it’s also become an essential marketing platform for e-commerce brands.
Since 2020, Pinterest has expanded to become an online shopping destination, and it’s making it easier than ever for users to search for and shop right from the platform (i.e. easier than ever to make sales on Pinterest!).
To help facilitate this, Pinterest has added some powerful new shopping features including their Verified Merchant Program, Shopify integration, Product Pins, and more.

Pinterest Strategy #4: Encourage your website visitors to Pin your content
Pinterest puts a high value on Pins that are pinned directly from websites from other users, so encouraging your website visitors to Pin content from your website is a great way to have others help do your marketing for you and increase your ranking in the Pinterest algorithm (having a lot of people Pin from your site increases the health of your account and shows Pinterest that you offer high value content).
You can encourage people to Pin content directly from your website by
- Adding a PinIt button to your website
- Including Pin graphics and good imagery in your blog posts & landing pages
- Using a CTA encouraging visitors to save the content to Pinterest
- Including keyword-rich meta data to your images.
Pinterest Strategy #5: Keep up to date on the latest features and best practices
With all of the changes we’ve seen to Pinterest in the last two years, it’s pretty safe to assume that the platform will continue to evolve this year as well.
I don’t predict we’ll see quite as many changes as we have since the start of 2022 because the last two years were a transitional period for the platform, but I think there will still be some more shifts to come.
To make sure you’re making the most of your Pinterest strategy, keep yourself updated on the latest Pinterest best practices. I share tips and advice here on the blog, on my Instagram, and in my monthly newsletter (grab your FREE Pinterest guide to join the mailing list!).
The bottom line?
Pinterest as a platform has undergone a major transformation in the last few years, and with a few changes to your strategy, you’ll be able to reap all of the benefits of the platform and crush your Pinterest marketing in 2022.
